Laurie McKay

Team Lead

Laurie likes to "walk the talk" as pastor of St. Aidan's church for over 10 years.  The mission of the church is simple: "Community, Compassion and Hope".   Finding creative ways to feed people in the midst of a pandemic has meant relying on the larger community's willingness to help out.  Laurie has been impressed with the generosity of the New Westminster leaders, businesses, and ordinary people!  "The pandemic has brought us together.  We are all searching for compassion, community and hope.  And it looks like this:  feeding the hungry and receiving food when we are hungry."

Betina Wheeler

Administrator

Betina describes herself as a passionate foodie; something she says she came by honestly on the knee of her grandmother back in Newfoundland. Since 2006, she has co-chaired New Westminster Community Food Action and has been a passionate food advocate, locally and provincially, bringing many food security projects to fruition. She is currently the Coalition and Projects Coordinator with the New Westminster Homelessness Coalition Society and has been supporting the implementation of the New Westminster Food Security Action Plan, and most recently the COVID-19 emergency food response. In the fall of 2019, she started to work with St. Aidan’s to help develop a barrier-free food support program that was informed by the voices of community residents with lived experience in food insecurity. The program was about to launch when COVID-19 hit. What followed, she says was nothing short of a miracle as the community rallied to support those in need and the St. Aidan’s Food Hub was established.

Elizabeth Philip

New Westminster Coordinator

Elizabeth has been involved with the food program for a long time and has incredible skill with processes that are efficient.  Her leadership with Century House and Senior's Society keeps her well connected with New Westminster agencies.  Elizabeth coordinates everything from ordering, receiving and assigning food supplies, to assigning weekly tasks to our many volunteers and coordinating distribution to the Queensborough and Sapperton sites.  We are thankful for her leadership and commitment!

Susan Jacobsen

Mid Week Coordinator

Susan is our coordinator for dry goods.  With Elizabeth, she orders from the Food Bank, receives the order, organizes the store, purchases items as needed, and organizes volunteers to purchase and bag items on Fridays for distribution on Saturdays.  It's tricky to maintain enough dry food with limited storage space. Susan is also expanding her role to help coordinate with Diana Walker and Rita Yip at the Queensborough site.  We appreciate Susan's ability to co-opt friends to join her passion to help neighbours!
