In mid-May 2020, Niko Marcina, Director of Coaching for the New Westminster Soccer Club, reached out to the Don't Go Hungry Food Program to offer his support. Less than a month later, the food program was able to open a site in the Queensborough company, run entirely by the New West Soccer Club.
Queensborough is home to the many of the most vulnerable people in the City of New Westminster. Special support is provided for those living on boats or on the streets in the Queensborough community. Warm coats are distributed as well as food. The City of New Westminster has also sponsored the program to move from distributing food outside to using the Queensborough Community Center from 1:00-2:00 on Saturdays.
“After speaking with Rev. Laurie Deacon about her program, I knew this was a partnership that was meant to be. New Westminster Soccer Club values community and will go to great lengths to serve our members in whatever capacity possible. I want this relationship to illustrate what collaboration and genuine action can accomplish for the community of New Westminster.” - Niko Marcina, Director of Coaching
With supporters like the NWSC, Don't Go Hungry program coordinators know that they will be able to continue to build and take care of their community, now and for years to come.
